Los Guerreros meet and honor local hero in Charlotte

11 de Septiembre del 2018 4:57 pm.

Los Guerreros look for more than to play international friendlies when they schedule games across the border.

Since 2015, the club has been replicating its Guerreros de Corazón program in Mexico in the United States, having worked with various associations and United Way to leave a footprint in every city to which they travel for international friendlies and tournaments.

Recently in Charlotte, North Carolina, Santos Laguna was given the opportunity to meet single mother and hometown-hero Yelitza Castro - an immigrant from Venezuela - who arrived in 2001 where she found help when she had no where else to go at local shelter Camino Community Center.

Camino Community Center serves many people in the area with limited resources. There's a kitchen that serves the homeless, a thrift store for shopping convenience, a gymnasium, and a health and wellness clinic that provides everything from routine exams to sugeries and treatments for cancer for those who cannot afford insurance and medical costs.

Since 2010, Yelitza has been “paying it forward” by preparing home-cooked meals for the homeless in Charlotte. She and her family serve at least 500 people each month in the Uptown area. Her son, Alex, serves alongside his mother every other Saturday, and while other kids are playing with their friends, Alex is making new ones and giving hope to the local homeless community.

During halftime at their game vs. local team Charlotte Independence, Santos Commercial and Marketing Director Jorge Fernandez gave Yelitza a team-signed jersey and club-branded soccer ball to Alex, to thank them for their example which falls in line with that of the club's philosophy: Winning by Serving is the Only Option.

Los Guerreros won their game that afternoon, but what they really gained from their trip was a new experience, leaving Santos Laguna's philosphy in new international territorry, forging new relationships and friendships in the process.
