The Houston Dynamo will be contenders in this year's Copa Santos Peñoles, the prestigious yearly international youth tournament held at Territorio Santos Modelo.
Academy Director James Clarkson had this to say ahead of the team's trip to Torreon:
“We are very excited to participate in such a prestigious event. Playing international competition as well as the cultural experience makes this such a valuable part of our development program on and off the field.”
The tournament will hold its inauguration Friday night at Estadio Corona and games will officially take place starting on Saturday. Games will include teams from all over Mexico and will include select teams from Santos' academies as well as the Dyanmo and a team from Colombia.
Since 2011, Copa Santos Peñoles has united thousands of kids and families both in and outside of the Laguna region through football. Scouts from Santos Laguna will be viewing teams throughout the five-day competition, which will include 217 teams and over 500 games from ages five to 18.
Aside from providing an unmatchable competitive experience and family-friendly environment, the tournament serves as a platform for young talent to be seen by Santos scouts. U17 national players Ronaldo Zinedin and Sebastian Tellez, and current U17 champions Jordan Carrillo and Daniel Hernandez Garay earned their places with the club through previous editions of the tournament.
