Carlos Izquierdoz - Defeating America would give us confidence ahead of Liguilla

25 de Abril del 2018 2:04 pm.

Los Guerreros are focused on their next match against Club America, which will be their final of the 2018 Clausura regular tournament before entering the quarterfinal phase of the Liguilla.

Las Aguilas, with a record of 6-8-2, are coming off a 3-1 away loss to Puebla, but team captain Carlos Izquierdoz insists that a top performance in a difficult Estadio Azteca is fundamental in order to approach the playoffs with confidence.

"America has the same intention as us, which is to finish as high in the table as possible and to be strong at home. What more is that we'll both be in the playoffs and are looking for the title. It'll be a game that we like to play, like a final as if we're already playing in each other in the liguilla.  The team has to put on its best performance to show and prove that we're a team worthy of being in the playoffs and that we're ready for what's to come."

A win at America and los Guerreros will improve their away record to 4-1-4 while closing the regular tournament with a second place finish. Regardless of a draw or loss,  they'll at the very least close in the top four and play host in the liguilla's away legs.

"Our previous results weren't great, but beyond the first halves against Atlas and Pachuca, the team has continued to work well so we have to keep it that way and correct small details," Izquierdoz added.

The Argentine defender acknowledged the strength in Las Aguilas and said Santos must be prepared in every way to face a tough team protecting its home turf, which includes former Santos striker Oribe Peralta.

"America has great players, not just Oribe. As much as he isn't in his best form at this moment, he is a goal scorer and we know that at any minute he can bounce back, and even more with the mentality that he has. We have to be prepared, focused, know the opponent well, know where they can hurt us on the counter attack and above all, trust in what we have been doing."

He continued:

"To achieve a victory at Estadio Azteca against a rival like America - which will be one of the rivals to beat in the liguilla - would be the best because we would enter the playoffs with everything, with that confidence to face the last six games."
