A total of six players from Santos’ Fuerzas Basicas were part of the starting lineup in a game that saw los Guerreros advance to the next Round in Copa MX. The team is now undefeated in all games played at Estadio Corona so far in the 2018 Clausura – five games in Liga MX play and two in Copa MX.
The game between Santos and Ascenso MX team Mineros de Zacatecas was fairly back and forth, at least for the first half. Los Guerreros saw their first close chance come when midfielder David Andrade sent a ball into the area in the 15th minute, but it was stopped by Mineros’ goalkeeper Adrián Monreal.
For the visitors, Josué Mercado came close when he found space in the area after a run of play down the left in the 32nd minute, but his soft shot was easily detained by Carlos Acevedo.
Just before the halftime whistle, Diego de Buen too a shot from the top of the 18, sending Monreal diving to his left to make the stop.
In the 55th minute after coming in as a substitute for Jesus Isijara, Javier Cortés appeared in the area but his opportunity was cut short by the rival ‘keeper.
A minute later, young Colombian forward Edwuin Cetré teamed up with Djaniny Tavares who had entered for Gerardo Arteaga at halftime. Tavares fed Cetre a pass, which he shot with force but the ball sailed wide of the right post.
As the clock wound down, Cetré found space in the box again, firing a shot from an angle toward goal, which defelcted off Monreal for a Santos corner kick.
Even with three minutes of added time and another corner kick before the final whistle, los Guerreros were unable to find the opening goal and finished their final group stage game with a point.
With the result, los Guerreros conclude the first phase of Copa MX with seven points in Group Two and will await the results of Wednesday’s Copa MX games to know their rival.
Head Coach Robert Dante Siboldi addressed media after the game, where more than half of the team was comprised of youth products to kick things off. The former Santos youth director said that he and the rest of the coaching staff saw this game as an opportunity for the club’s young talent.
“It's important for players who normally don't have that much participation (in league games) to play, for us to see them and how they do in a game situation,” he said.
“We use this as an opportunity for all players to show their rhythm and show us what they can do. It's part of their formation. They're young, 18 and 19 years old. In situations like these, we're able to see more of what their level is. It's a good metric for their future.”
