Los Guerreros have climbed the Liga MX table and now sit in fourth place after a confident 2-0 win over Chivas on Saturday, with goals by Julio Furch and Djaniny Tavares.
The entire opening 45 minutes were dominated by Santos, with Furch coming close to an opener in the 16th minute when Brian Lozano lobbed a grounded pass to Djaniny from the midfield. Djaniny controlled the ball and crossed into the area from the left, meeting Furch who attempted a header which bounced off the crossbar and almost crossed Rodolfo Cota's line, but the rebound was cleared out by Chivas' defense.
Furch got his goal in the 31st minute with another header from inside the area off a pass from Brian Lozano.
Los Guerreros continued to maintain a majority of the possession and came out just as aggressive in the second half. Djaniny came close to los Guerreros' second goal in the 53rd minute when he chest trapped a ball on a run of play, looking to go one on one with Cota. He struck with his left foot and Cota came out to block the ball, sending it bouncing wide and to the left.
The African striker pulled los Guerreros ahead five minutes later, anticipating a ball from Jose Javier Abella from right midfield. The pass was perfectly weighted and placed for Djaniny, already in the area. He got his left leg on the ball as it came down and he sent it past Cota, arriving at seven goals in six games and maintaining his status as leading goal scorer in the tournament.
Goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo had an exceptional game, displying his quick reflexes in the 59th and 60th minutes by denying two successive shots in the area by Ronaldo Cisneros and Alan Pulido.
Los Guerreros continued to dictate the flow of the game and dominated possession. Carlos Izquierdoz came up big for los Guerreros on two occasions, one in particular in the 66th minute when he dove into the area to head a ball to the feet of Acevedo, denying Chivas of the opportunity to go one on one with the 'keeper.
Head coach Robert Dante Siboldi made three substitutions in the second half, deploying Javier Cortes, Jonathan Rodriguez, and Ulises Rivas for Brian Lozano, Djaniny Tavares, and Osvaldo Martinez, respetively.
The teams played through four minutes of added time to arrive at a final score of 2-0, sending los Guerreros up to fourth place in the table with 11 points.
The team now shifts its focus to a midweek game against Leon on Wednesday, February 14th at Estadio Corona. That game is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. kick off.
"We treated the game going in as if it would be difficult. It was a very good game on our behalf. We tried to expose the spaces, stop their attempts to go forward, always have the ball, mark their players in front and behind. Nestor (Aruajo) had a good game, Jose (Javier Abella) and (Jorge Villafaña) did their jobs on the wings. We met our goal of not receiving a goal in this field.
"We were very well-organized, and had the velocity when we regained possession of the ball, we came out and did exactly what we've been working on in these last few days and the players did very well."
