Santos Laguna falls 2-0 to Toluca in Copa MX play

Santos Laguna played to a 2-0 loss at Estadio Nemesio Diaz on Wednesday night in Round Four of Copa MX, with both goals by Alexis Canelo in the first and second half.

Toluca came out on the offensive immediately, generating opportunities from outside and inside the area. Central defender and Copa MX captain Gerardo Alcoba made an important clearance to deny Rubens Sambueza as he approached the center of the box from the right flank.

Goalkeeper Carlos Acevedo put up a valient effort in goal with key saves off dangerous shots by the hosts. In the 18th minute, the Santos Laguna youth product leaped up to tip a ball over the crossbar off a right-footed shot by Angel Reyna from the top of the 18 yard box, denying what would have been the opening goal for Toluca.

Canelo putt he Red Devils up in the 27th minute when he recieved a pass into the area from the top of the 18 yard box from Reyna. He struck from inside, beating Acevedo with a shot which sailed into the upper right corner.

Los Guerreros found themselves down to 10 men just before the halftime whistle when Brian Lozano was shown a red card in a scuffle that also saw two players from Toluca cautioned with yellow cards.

Santos generated more offensive opportunities immediately in the second half, when head coach Robert Dante Siboldi made two halftime substitutions, sending forward Julio Furch and right-back Jose Javier Abella in for Diego de Buen and Cris Martinez.

Jonathan Rodriguez was able to find space in Toluca’s area to open the second half, but was eventually denied by Toluca’s defense with a shot that was deflected wide of the near post.

Siboldi made his third and final sub halfway into the second half, debuting 20 year old Colombian forward Edwuin Cetré in place of Rodriguez.

Acevedo made two crucial saves in the 70th and 81st minutes of play, first denying a shot on goal by Alexis Vega and later blocking a close-range header with his leg, where the ball was quickly cleared by Santos’ defense.

In the 82nd minute, Toluca found their second goal when Canelo struck again from the top of the area.

Just as the referee signaled for five minutes of added time, Alcoba denied a run of play down the left, drawing a corner kick for the hosts which was quickly cleared out.

Los Guerreros were unable to find a goal as the game wound down, and settled for their first loss of the Cup competition. The team will resume Copa MX action on February 27 when it hosts Mineros de Zacatecas at Estadio Corona.

Next on the agenda for Santos is a week six match vs. Chivas in Guadalajara on Saturday, before returning to Torreon where they’ll prepare to host Leon on Wednesday, February 14th.
