Santos Laguna defeats Queretaro 2-1 to remain in fight for Liguilla spot

21 de Octubre del 2017 7:43 pm.

Santos Laguna recorded its second straight win Saturday afternoon, with two goals by Argentine striker Julio Furch and two assists by Djaniny Tavares. Camilo Sanvezzo scored for the hosts.

Los Guerreros dominated from the beginning via Tavares and Uruguayan forward Jonathan Rodriguez – Tavares missed an early header while Rodriguez sent a shot just wide of goal.

Team captain Carlos Izquierdoz attempted a header from inside the area off a corner just before the 10th minute mark, but goalkeeper Thiago Volpi was there to make the save off the Argentine’s attempt.

Queretaro had a pair of close calls in the 23rd minute, the first was a dangerous strike from the center which was brilliantly saved by goalkeeper Jonathan Orozco, the second just barely grazed the crossbar.

In the 27th minute, Tavares initiated a play and laid off a pass to Furch, who sent a grounded ball from the top center of the 18 to the left of Volpi for the opening goal.

Sanvezzo equalized in the 30th minute, with a left-footed strike from the top corner, sending Orozco diving the right way and only inches from the ball, which sailed into the bottom left corner.

Tavares and Furch teamed up again in a play in the 35th minute which resulted in a goal almost identical to Furch’s first, Tavares laying off a pass to the Argentine, who took the ball into the area and shot down the middle past Volpi for his second of the night.

Los Guerreros maintained their lead into the second half. In the 53rd minute, Queretaro looked to level via halftime sub Jordi Cortizo, who attempted a scorpion kick from the center of the box but the ball sailed up and over Orozco’s crossbar.

Five minutes later, Los Guerreros almost nabbed a third by way of Tavares, who took off down the left and sent a grounded cross into the area, but the ball rolled out of the area without connecting with a man in the box.

Head coach Robert Dante Siboldi made three changes in the second half, sending Ulises Rivas in for Brian Lozano, Javier Cortes for Tavares, and Emiliano Armenteros for Rodriguez.

In the final minutes of the game, which included four of added time, Los Guerreros maintained intelligent control of the ball and did well to divert two chances by Queretaro, who threatened with another chance from inside the area but the ball was easily caught in the air by Orozco.

For their final chance, Los Gallos sent a corner kick into the area looking to equalize off a set piece, but Orozco was attentive and punched it clear before the final whistle.

With the win, Los Guerreros arrive at 15 points in the table with a fighting chance for a spot in the Liga MX playoffs. The team will return to Torreon Saturday night and will begin their week of training on Sunday morning, to prepare for a double game week: Copa MX on Wednesday and Pachuca at TSM on Sunday.
