Jorge Villafaña called by Bruce Arena for October World Cup qualifiers

01 de Octubre del 2017 11:51 am.

U.S. Men’s national team head coach Bruce Arena has called Jorge Villafaña to represent the United States for World Cup qualifiers against Panama and Trinidad and Tobago.

The U.S has two games remaining in the Final Round of Qualifying, and could book a ticket to Russia 2018 with a win at home against Panama and away to last-place Trinidad & Tobago.

“It’s a roster we’ve selected that we believe will give us success in these next two games,” Arena said in a statement provided by US Soccer.

“We have a pretty balanced roster with experienced players. The players always give the commitment, that’s never an issue. The issue is whether we get the results we need, and I think we’re positioned to do that. I think if it comes down to where we need four or six points in our last two games, I think that’s fine and we’ll get it done.”

As of August, “Villa” was tied with national team teammate Graham Zusi for number of starts, leading the team in 2017 with 11. He made his 12th start on September 2nd against Costa Rica.

“I’m happy for the opportunity that coach Bruce and US Soccer have given me to be part of the national team,” he told the club.

“When you wear the national team jersey you always want to give the team you represent your best and I’m always looking ahead. I would like to be in the World Cup.

“(I’ll work) to be a guy who communicates from the back. Who organizes the players in front of you and be a guy that can be vocal on the field.”

Villafaña and the U.S. Men will face Panama at 7:30 p.m. ET on Oct. 6 from Orlando City Stadium in Orlando, Fla.

On Oct. 10, the U.S. can secure their spot in the 2018 World Cup in the final match of the Hex against Trinidad & Tobago at Ato Boldon Stadium in Couva, Trinidad.
