With another full tournament almost in the books, Santos Laguna will continue to fight to have all categories in its Fuerzas Basicas in the post season once again.
In the 2016 Clausura, every category from the U15 to the second division team made it at least to the semifinals, with the U15 and U17 both coming up short in the finals against Pachuca. The U17, who had defeated Pachuca in the final to become champions the previous tournament, fell to los Tuzos at Estadio Hidalgo, the result good enough for a runner up medal. It was the same story for the U15, who came close to defeating los Tuzos on enemy soil, but a late goal by Pachuca sealed the deal and los Guerreros of the U15 also walked away with the runner up trophy.
After a strong showing under head coach Omar Tapia, finishing their group in first place with 32 points and a league-best defense in their category, the under 15 team has already qualified for the semifinals, which they will play against Veracruz on Saturday, November 15. The winner of that game will face the winner of Pachuca-Atlas in the final.
The U20 team remains in second place in the table with a league-best offense, having scored 32 goals, nine of those coming from league-leader and U20 Mexico international Ronaldo Cisneros. The group, led by Uruguayan head coach Gonzalo Cigliuti and boasts nine national team players in total, recently ended a 12-game unbeaten streak after a 2-1 defeat to Chivas at TSM in a week five make-up game.
Coach Arturo "Catcho" Cruz' U17 are in the fight to secure a playoff spot in seventh place and can do so if they can defeat Toluca for the final game of the tournament. The group suffered a setback later in the tournament but has turned things around as of late, coming off a 2-1 win at home over Chivas.
The second division team remains in the fight for a spot in their post season and can still qualify with a win in their final game and if other results around the league fall in their favor.
